PhysicalDisk vs. Logical Disk Performance Object

Some time ago I posted a note about how to monitor performance. The discussion focused mainly on the performance object 'logical disk'. Well you can ignore that post because I am almost done writing a MP which does all of this for you. Also, it is built using the PhysicalDisk object instead. What I learned in SAN environments, where 'mount points' are used on the servers, the LogicalDisk object was ineffective, simply, it did not see the physical disks in the SAN. In addition to being able to see the correct disks, working with the PhysicalDisk object simplified everything.

The discovery of the Physical Disk class is disabled by default so it is super easy to, in the MP, configure it to enable just for the computers whose disk is to be monitored. This makes the MP much more efficient. Not to oversimplify, but I wanted to make an MP which was as close to "plug & work" as possible. This release only requires one computer group to have servers explicitly added but soon this will be replaced with discovery. The image below is a screen shot of what data the MP includes. As you can imagine, this will grow by leaps and bounds and will quickly extend beyond the database server up through all core components.

Operations Manager 2007 requires the following minimum network connectivity speeds between the specified components. In addition to the 768 Kbps required between the Console and RMS, the performance of the Console is adversely affected as latency increases:
